‘Battle Blasters’ Review
Consoles have always had classics such as Super Mario, Sonic, or in our case, Doodle Jump, but the thing is, these consoles would be nothing without new games that try to think out of the box and try something completely original that works really well.
Battle Blasters is one of those innovations. The aim of the game is to finish off your enemy on the other side of the screen by shooting energy blasts at the opponent.
However, the gameplay is deeper than what it may seem at first. Your character has 4 possible types of actions. Fast shot, slow shot, special move and block. The fast shot does what the slow shot does except that the slow shot will absorb the fast shot if they collide which makes up for the fact that it’s slower. When you block successfully, you reflect the shot. The special move changes depending on your character. One of the characters for example, shoots and ice shot, which make the opponent freeze for a moment, and another can throw a blade straight ahead. Being successful in battles depends on successfully using a range of all the skills above.
The graphics in this game are pretty great. The pixel graphics are in my opinion, the best thing for this game. They fit the ‘retro fighting game’ feeling that this game emits and the scenes that are currently in the game could not have been done as well in 3D as with the characters. The sound effects and music in this game are also wonderfully composed as each area/map has it’s own unique music that makes it feel more distinct. The sound effects are a wonderful flash back to the golden days of arcade fighting games like Street Fighter.
Overall, I’d say this is an excellent game with extreme amounts of polish, though if you’re interested in getting all of the characters and playing any difficulty above easy, you’ll have to be pretty devoted or just a natural at this type of game as the AI can get really skilled after medium or easy.
Overall rating: 4/5 (great arcade/retro style game with sometimes awkward controls)
