YAHTZEE With Buddies has been a popular iOS game for some time now, after Hasbro decided to partner with mobile developer Scopely to produce the game. At the time, Scopely already had a successful app called Dice With Buddies that was built on the YAHTZEE concept, but the official version turned out to be an instant hit. Soon after its release, it was quickly ranked #17 among free downloads in the U.S.
As you can tell from the title, this particular game also incorporates a social element, allowing gamers to play against friends or strangers and even enter tournaments for more competitive games. In these competitions you’re pretty much playing just to win, though you can unlock special dice to play with. The game has never been a stranger to innovation either, having become available on the Apple Watch not long after its initial release. But lately, the game has embraced a growing trend in mobile gaming, which involves popular titles adopting themes and characters from featured films and TV shows.
It’s a trend we’ve seen mostly through superhero mobile games, such as Marvel: Contest Of Champions. One of several Kabam apps based on films and important characters, this game is constantly updated with content relating to the most recent Marvel films. For instance, there were new missions and contests centering on the plot line of Captain America: Civil War during the spring, and there have recently been a few X-Men characters added in the aftermath of X-Men: Apocalypse.
It’s also something we’ve seen in the casino genre, also sometimes with regard to superhero projects. Gala Casino’s mobile games are available on iOS as well, and while there are some games (such as Gladiator slots) based on older projects, the featured games often reflect mainstream cinema. Multiple games based on the likes of Iron Man, Spider-Man and the Hulk have all been added over the years as the films have come out.
Now Scopely had done much the same thing in embracing the Ghostbusters film that’s debuting not too long ago. The movie may not be getting good reviews early on, but it’s one of the most heavily advertised films of the summer. It’s also going to cater to droves of fans of the original no matter how bad the reviews are. There are now new gaming options (like ECTO-1 Fast Play) and background designs that capture the spirit of the Ghostbusters movie. The film’s official logo, green slime, and ghostly figures are taking over the screen to inject some new excitement into this reliable, beloved game.
