Sometimes the best games on iPhone are simple to play, easy to understand and minimalistic in design. Novo Games understand that and have implemented those aspects in their latest game Mirror Dash. If you have ever played and enjoyed the The Impossible Game, then Mirror Dash is right up your alley. Although there are basic similarities between the two games, to say they are the same is incorrect as in reality they play very different due to one very specific aspect which is stated in the name, ‘Mirror’.
Whilst you are jumping over obstacles to stay alive you also have the ability to ‘mirror’ yourself to the bottom half of the screen allowing you to go through a possibly easier path and get further through the zone. On some occasions you will have to mirror in order to survive.
The controls are very simple, simply tap the right of the screen to jump, and the left of the screen to mirror. The game currently has five different environments, each with their own atmospheres, different characters and well picked music. You unlock more environments by progressing further through the zones. These environments include Egypt, Japan, France, Italy and Britain. The levels are quite difficult so whilst it sounds like there isn’t much gameplay value there actually is. I’ve attempted the first zone 52 times and have only progressed 32%, during this time I have however unlocked another environment.
One addition I would like is possibly a different mode with checkpoints in order to offer a different gameplay experience. Whilst playing I found it quite difficult to progress past certain areas of the world and it was quite irritating having to play 20 seconds to die at the exact same point again. Despite this, it does make the game more replay-able and over time you do get the hang of the particular areas that you get stuck on as you progress deeper into the zones. It also could be the fact that I am quite terrible at these types of games, something I am not ashamed to admit.
Mirror Dash is a very fun, challenging but also addictive 2D platformer that is definitely worth trying out. It is currently available for $0.99 on the App Store. There is also free version of the game available for you to try out before you decide if you want to by the full version.
