Picture this: you are out to dinner in London, eagerly awaiting your favorite meal of fish and chips. While you’re excited for the fish, you’re even more excited to break open that bag of Lay’s potato chips. But when the waiter returns with your meal, you are confused to see french fries instead of chips as your side dish. This minor misunderstanding can be chalked up to slang and can now be avoided, thanks to Say What! Say What is a one of a kind translation app now available for download in the App Store and in the Google Play Store.
This innovative app seamlessly translates slang from English speaking countries into American English, allowing you to fully understand the nuances of the English language. Upon downloading Say What, you will be able to review, submit, and translate unfamiliar terms you hear in England, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, and South Africa. This helpful app will be critical the next time you travel abroad, as you can search by either country or phrase, allowing you to truly master the native slang.
One of my favorite features of Say What is its submission feature. Language is constantly evolving, with new terminology developing daily. With this app, you to submit new and exciting slang that may not be found in a dictionary or online. Submitting phrases enables you to directly help tourists better understand your culture, which is pretty cool!
While this app is a traveller’s holy grail, there is one minor downside: translations are limited to the six countries mentioned above. Obviously, these are not the only countries that speak English. What if you are on vacation in Ireland and someone tells you that you are “acting the maggot”? How are you supposed to know that you are being called foolish if you can’t plug it into your Say What translator? While this is an issue now, I’m sure that in the future more countries will be added to rectify this slight drawback. Overall, Say What is a phenomenal, must-have app for any and all travelers!
