Despite releasing a new Aura SSD for the Mac Pro and Mercury Extreme Pro SSD, OWC is still starting the year off strong with even more products. Now introducing the Mercury Elite Pro Dual, it’s a hardware RAID storage solution featuring high speed USB 3.1 Gen 1 and two FireWire 800 ports. The Mercury Elite Pro Dual sports two 7200 RPM 3.5″ hard drives with storage capabilities up to 12TB. Depending on your use case, it can be configured in RAID 0, RAID 1, SPAN, and Independent modes. If you want redundancy and protection against your data, we suggesting sticking with RAID 1.
Additional features of the Mercury Elite Pro Dual include:
- USB 3.1 Gen 1 (USB 3.0/2.0 compatible) and dual FireWire 800 connectivity.
- Transfer speeds up to 390MB/s.
- Drive and Activity Status LEDs.
- Ships in RAID 0.
For those not familiar with the different storage modes, here’s a quick run down:
- RAID 1 – writes the same information to both drives in real-time for data redundancy.
- SPAN – combines both drives into a single, larger volume.
- Independent Mode – each drive will mount separately.
Next up, the device comes in a brushed-aluminum chassis with a variable-speed fan so the hard drives stay at cool temperatures. Activity LEDs provide an idea of what hard drive is being used, and intelligent power management reduces wear by automatically spinning down the drives when inactive. All Mercury Elite Pro Dual units include connecting cables, configuration and backup software, as well as a three-year limited warranty. That warranty includes free lifetime US-based 24/7 technical support, a 48-hour repair turnaround time, and one year of complimentary Level 1 data recovery service.
The prices range from $239.99 to $697.99 depending on how much storage space you want, however, for $119.99 you can add your own drives and just get an empty chassis. If you’re looking to get the best bang for your buck, we suggest getting the empty chassis version and picking up a couple hard drives from Western Digital.
