‘Tank Battle 1944’ – WWII Turn Based Strategy Game [Review]
Years ago I really enjoyed a PC game called Panzer General. It was a turned based strategy game based on WWII, ever since then I have looked for a mobile version of the game or something similar to it. Tank Battle 1944 from Hunted Cow Studios definitely fits the bill.
The game goes a great job creating a fun, easy to learn, expandable turn based strategy game based on the armored battle groups of the Allies and Axis powers during World War II. The game comes with two main options: Campaign (which you play against the computer) or Two Player (which you play with another on the same device).
The Pro version of the game comes with 2 campaigns for a total of twenty missions. You can also purchase four more campaigns, giving you a ton more missions with an in-app purchase. The missions within the campaigns need to played in order and you need to fulfill the mission objectives to unlock the next mission.
With the Two Player option, there are 12 missions you can play. For those unfamiliar with this style of game, the game comes with a nice help section which shows you how to play the game, the game controls, and information on each of the units you can play or fight against in the game.
The settings within the game are great, chose the level of difficulty and then begin. Not a lot of moving parts or complicated controls, so you can jump right in and play. To move a unit, simply tap of it. The hexes what are white show where you can move and the yellow barrier is your firing range. A unit can only move or fire during a turn so you will need to choose which you want to do. Each unit has a number next to it, which represents its health.
During your turn you will have the option to move or fire each of your units and when you are done, it is your enemy’s turn. The fog of war is always on, which definitely adds to the enjoyment of the game. You can scroll around the screen to get a general idea of the battlefield but there is no pinch to zoom, which I really wish the game had.
On the screen the game keeps track of the turn number and whose turn it is. You can also see the missions objectives if you forget. Another nice option of the game is that you can close it and come back later and finish the game. You cannot have more than 1 saved game at a time though. Games can take some time to play so it is nice to be able to come back to it.
The graphics (the units and terrain) in the game are very well done and add the enjoyment. I really cannot say enough about the game- it is very well done and should be one that all fans of turn based strategy games or WW II games have in their library. There is a free version of the game if you want to try it out before buying. You can download the game for $1.99 by clicking here.
