‘Bean’s Quest’ Review
When it comes to the App Store, platformers are generally a hit or miss. Sometimes what looks good on paper isn’t good in practice. Then comes a little gem called Bean’s Quest, with a protagonist called Emilio who is an interestingly cute Mexican jumping bean. Will Emilio be a hit in the App Store? Read on to find out.
When I first looked at the screenshots I instantly fell in love with Emilio’s cute 16 bit charm. The graphics are as stated the old style 16 bit with a very catchy retro music soundtrack.
The interesting thing about this app it is a simple platformer in which all you do is simply move left and right. I think the developers made a good move in having Emilio automatically jump. It can be slightly tricky to control at first because without the control element timing is everything, but after a couple of tries it becomes easy.
Emilio is a lean bean-bouncing machine, he loves bouncing from the moment you start the level. He jumps onto platforms, springs, and enemies, while collecting very beautiful gems. There are even hidden areas inside the platform in which you must bounce around to discover. Additionally, there are even different buttons in which make platforms appear and disappear in order to get to a certain area.
One of the good things about this game is that it has unlimited lives with checkpoints. It takes the stress away from the overall game which is very smart move on the developers part.
The downside to this app is that it only has eight levels, it is very short that as soon as you get into the apps it is over and you are left with the feeling as if it was a lite version and now you want to buy the actual thing. Sadly, you will realize that isn’t the case. Other than that I see no flaws.
Would I recommend this app? If I am recommending on gameplay and it is such a good game, I would say yes buy it right away. However, from your wallet’s point of view $2.99 is a lot to pay for an app with very few levels when there are games out there for $0.99 that came out with 100+ levels.
The developers did mention that they are going to update next month with 16 new levels bringing up its total levels to 24. Although, once again 24 levels is very little compare to other apps that launch with 100+ levels. If you love platformers and don’t mind the shortage of levels I would say get it because it is a very good platformer. If not I would say wait for a sale or when it has more content so you don’t have to fall in love with it and then have to wait weeks for more levels.
Final Score: All in all 3.5/5 because of what it is currently.
