‘HECTOR: Badge of Carnage Ep1’ Review
Story: 9/10
The hero of the game is a “fat arsed” detective inspector named Hector. The story takes place in a fictional town called Clappers Wreake. Clappers Wreake is a town full of violence, dirt and body fluids where death, or eastern European hookers, are on every corner of the street. Luckily Hector has a partner named Lambert. Lambert is mostly used as background filling but can occasionally give you some useful info……occasionally. When a hostage situation breaks out in the town of Clappers Wreake it’s up to Hector to restore peace in this festering sh*thole. He must do this by completing a list of demands from the hostage taker. But Hector managed to get himself locked up in jail without pants after a night of drinking. Does Hector have what it takes to free Clappers Wreake from tyranny? It’s up to you to find out. But first find Hectors “bleedin’ pants”.
The story is actually well written and full of smart jokes and clever dialogue. I’ve played a lot of point and click games back in the days. Hector isn’t exactly one of the hardest point and click games out there, but it sure is one of the funniest. The cunning remarks and dialogue of Hector and citizens of Clappers Wreake are outstanding. It doesn’t matter if you encounter a wannabe thug or polish whores or even an annoying granny with a stun gun, The dialogue they use is really great.
Gameplay 8/10
It seems the iphone is really made for point and click, or point and touch in this case, kind of game. The controls are easy. Its basically click, double click and combining and using items. You touch to move Hector around, You touch to talk to people etc. There are several dialogue options or topics to choose from when talking to people. The puzzles you encounter are outstanding and funny as well. Most of them aren’t too hard and offer a fair challenge. There are different area’s you can go to too try and solve the puzzles to complete the demands. Also the demands can be completed in whatever order you would like to do them. So if you’re stuck at demand number one, you can go and try to complete demand number two. And if you’re really stuck you can always ask Lambert for some tips. The game play is good, but short. If you rush through the game you can beat it within 4 hours. And if you’ve finished this game, there’s no reason to play it again. But this is only episode 1. Strandlooper has announced episodes 2 and 3 will arrive this year and an ipad version of part 1 this spring.
Graphics 9/10
Don’t be fooled by the kiddy style graphics, this game isn’t for the feint of hearted. It contains lots of blood, gore, filth and other bodily fluids. The graphics look pretty amazing on the iPhone. It looks nice and polished without any graphical glitches that’ll pull you out of the game. The places you can visit are also very diverse. Just click the link above to see the trailer of Hector badge of carnage to see what I mean. It’s a clean looking game, with great visuals.
Sound 7/10
The voices of the characters are great, everyone has its own unique voice and speaking style. All dialogues are spoken, and pretty funny and clever as mentioned above. The intro movie’s music really draws you into the story of Hector badge of carnage. It’s all very clean and nice to listen to. All the sound effects are in place too. So if smash a window or flush a toilet then the sounds will sound like the real thing. But it doesn’t have the epic music or sound effects some other games out there have.
Overall — 8.3/10
If you’re a fan of the point and click or point and touch genre then Hector badge of carnage is the game for you. It offers quite some challenging puzzles and great artwork. Not to mention the clever dialogues and great sense of humor this game has to offer. The sounds might not be as “epic” as some other titles. Also the game is fairly short if rush through it and the re-playability is low. If you’ve finished the game there’s no reason to play it again, aside from the outstanding dialogue and humor that is. But if you like puzzle or point and click games, then give Hector badge of carnage episode 1 a try. It’s easily one of the best point and click games in the App Store. You won’t be disappointed.
