Apple Released New MacBook Airs, FaceTime for Mac, iLife ’11, and announces Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion” and App Store for Mac [Roundup]
Just yesterday, Apple held a press conference that covered many things – new MacBook Airs, FaceTime for Mac, Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion”, and App Store for Mac. So, let’s jump in.
Releases
- New MacBook Airs
Apple announced their new line up of the MacBook Airs ranging from $999 to $1,599 in price. One new thing about them all, is that they now all have Flash storage (SSDs),which come in 64GB, 128GB, and 265G. They now also have Retina Displays (see below for more info).
Corner to corner and pixel by pixel, the display on the new MacBook Air is both an engineering feat and a design breakthrough. It measures a mere 4.86 millimeters (0.19 inch) thin, yet the resolution is so high, you’ll feel like you’re looking at a much larger screen. And with good reason. The 11-inch MacBook Air features a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution greater than that of a typical 13-inch notebook, while the 13-inch MacBook Air wows with a resolution equivalent to a typical 15-inch notebook.

- FaceTime for Mac
Next up is FaceTime for Mac. Apple announced that they would be bringing the iPhone and iPod Touch video chat service to the Mac. Currently, there’s a beta version available to download for Macs running Snow Leopard or later. FaceTime will mac will be able to FaceTime users who have a iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4G too, so no worries there. You can see all the info and details here along with downloading the beta if you have a Mac.
- iLife ’11
Yesterday at the event, Apple released the next addition to iLife, iLife ’11, which includes new features for iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand. New features to iWeb and iDVD have not been added nor am I sure if Apple will update them either. But nonetheless, you can see this page for all the info and features.
Announcements
- Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion”
Probably the biggest thing at the event was the announcement of Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion” along with an App Store for Mac (we’ll cover that later). But nonetheless, Apple announce the next Mac OS, Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion”, and let me tell you, it sure will be an interesting update for sure. Mac OS X 10.7 will include a number of things, a launchpad for your apps, a App Store for the Mac, full-screen app running, and a number of other things. You can see all the features Apple has covered (apparently, there will be more on the initial release) right here
- App Store for Mac
Last but certainly not least, Apple has announced that there will be an App Store for the Mac. Yes, you read the correctly. Apple will be introducing an App Store just for the Mac and will be taking submissions sometime in November for the Mac App Store. The actual release of the Mac App Store isn’t too far off in the future either, so, you don’t have that much longer of a wait. For more details and info click here.
And that concludes that roundup for Apple Media Event! Thanks for reading!
