‘Trenches’ Review
Real time strategy games are one of those genres that could really work on the iPhone and iPod Touch. The touch interface is excellent for all those menus for upgrades, options and, of course, for directing your troops.
It comes as no surprise then, that many real time strategy games have been released on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Trenches is just one out of the many but it really does stand out.
To send a troop into battle, you tap one of the icons at the bottom of the screen. There are four possible troops you can send as well as two one off attacks (gas and bombs). After sending them onto battle, the men will keep marching until you direct them somewhere, by drawing a line from them to the desired destination. The only annoyance I found with this was that when you wanted to make all your troops go forward, it could be annoying having to draw all those lines.
The graphics in this game are best described as smooth. All the sprites are well rounded and all the animations were equally as smooth. The sound effects also really worked well and the guns although could be heard, didn’t annoy me much. The screams that the soldiers make when they die are actually quite comical!
Overall, this game is really a great one. With Openfeint integration and the promise of multiplayer in an update, this game is a must for all strategy gamers out there and I’m sure even the casual gamers out there will have something they like about this game, whether it be the smooth graphics, the excellent skirmish mode or even just the world war one theme!
Final score: 4/5 (great strategy game with very minor flaws)
