Adobe Flash On It's Way To The iPhone (Sorta)
+
Yes, it’s true Flash is heading to the iPhone, sorta. It’s not the Flash Player that we use to watch videos on Youtube, but it’s still Flash. Adobe announced at its annual Adobe Max keynote that Flash is heading to the iPhone, by Flash they mean ‘Flash games’ like games on addictinggames.com. What this means is you will be seeing more and more flash based apps heading to the App Store. How this will work is, Adobe Flash Flash CS5 Professional (currently in pre-beta) will let you create Flash based apps then allow you to convert the flash game to the native .ipa format used for the iPhone and iPod Touch. At the end of the post there is a demonstration video.
“A public beta version of Flash CS5 Professional with this new capability is planned for later this year. This new capability in Flash CS5 Professional allows developers to use their preferred Flash Platform tools and technologies to develop content for a device that was previously closed to them.”
Even before this announcement there were already “Flash based” applications in the App Store. Yes, really. Adobe says they put them up in secrecy to avoid a leak of the announcement before the keynote.
The full list of applications which use the new platform:
– Just Letters
– Finger Paint
– Red Hood
– Chroma Circuit
– FickleBlox
– That Roach Game
– Trading Stuff
– South Park Avatar Creator
So, when Adobe releases the beta version of lash CS5 Professional later this year you can start making flash games then port them over to the iPhone .ipa format then submit it to Apple. The only thing is though, will this be easier than creating apps in objective-c 2.0 in the Apple SDK for the iPhone? We want to hear your comments on if you think this will be easier than creating apps in the iPhone SDK below, so leave a comment on what you think.
When asked if Flash Player would ever come to the iPhone, this is what Adobe had to say:
“Flash Player uses a just-in-time compiler and virtual machine within a browser plug-in to play back content on websites. Those technologies are not allowed on the iPhone at this time, so a Flash Player for iPhone is not being made available today.”
So the actual “Flash Player” is not in the works for the iPhone yet, possibly in the near future Adobe and Apple will start working on the actual “Flash Player”. So to sum it all up, just be ready to see a lot of apps based on the original flash version heading into the App Store in the upcoming months.
