Gameloft has dropped 5 of their games to $0.99 in celebration of the Spring season. The games that have gone on sale are: Earthworm Jim, Blades of Fury, Real Soccer 2010, Dungeon Hunter, and Skater Nation. I have all those games except Earthworm Jim. I must say that each game is worth $0.99 and is a steal. This offer ends March 21st, so hurry up and download these apps!

EA has released some info and screenshots of Skate It. It appears to be that Skate It is a skimmed down version of Skate for the PS3 and XBOX 360.  Skate It is scheduled for release in early May, but EA hasn’t released any info on the price. Now, the interesting thing is, how will this compare to Skater Nation by Gameloft or Mike V: Do or Die? Here are the key features:

My one painfully brief attempt at skate-boarding in the real world resulted in two bloody knees and a bruised ego…But armed with my trusty Dual Shock I could grind, ollie, and kick-flip with the best of ‘em through Tony Hawk’s Playstation outings. So suitably stoked, I jumped on-board Gameloft’s latest, Skater Nation without hesitation.

And after spending some time rolling around “Sandifornia” (the game’s fictional setting), I’m happy to report Skater Nation does a pretty commendable job of recreating the thrills and spills of console skate ‘em ups on iPhone/iPod touch. That said, some niggling problems unfortunately stop this title from being the hand-held alternative to games like SKATE and Tony Hawk Pro Skater it so obviously aspires to be.

Controls are tricky (geddit?) at first, but put in some practice on the tutorial and soon you’ll get to grips with the game’s set up. A d-pad moves your skater around, while a and b buttons handle jumps and pulling off tricks. Balancing when grinding is achieved by tilting the device. Graphics are good, but not as immediately impressive as those in some of Gameloft’s other recent titles, plus an overly zoomed-in view of your protagonist means he/she always seems to fill too much of the screen obstructing your perspective of the surroundings.

The open-world environment is equally underwhelming, and although the 3D city contains ten different skate-able areas including beaches, residential areas and the obligatory skate park, Sandifornia feels like a ghost town; with hardly anyone strolling its streets or traffic on the roads.The blink-and-miss-them loading times between areas are a positive though, as is the ability to unlock a vast array of boards, wheels, and trucks as you play. While upgrading your kit and fiddling about with wheel alignment and so forth adds depth to the title.

The “story” mode gives you the choice of eight equally gnarly dudes and dudettes to play as, but amounts to more or less the same game whoever you opt for, and has you competing against rival skaters, and completing challenges, whilst you rack up sick scores, and win trophies in a bid to be crowned champion of an annual skating competition (typically terrible writing and laughably poor dialogue from Gameloft is present and accounted for).

Free Ride on the other hand lets you loose on the streets to skate at your own pace, handily allowing you to visit any area by traveling through portals. Both modes can be good fun once you come to terms with the game’s limitations and master the challenging control scheme.

But to be brutally honest, the game feels a bit rushed and lacks the attention to detail and extra features I’ve come to expect from this developer (for example there’s no option to play your own tunes while you skate, meaning you’re stuck with the handful of generic tracks on offer). So overall Skater Nation doesn’t fall flat on its face, but never quite soars to the dizzying heights of its inspirations either.

Score: 7 out of 10

Driver: This is rumored to be an enhanced port of the PlayStation 1 classic. So expect a more linear, mission based experience than that of the sandbox world of Gangstar: West Coast Hustle, with a focus on in-car action and cinematic cop chases rather than the go anywhere, do anything style of more recent titles. That said, Driver was (and is) an amazing game, and is responsible for spawning a generation of 3D crime-sims such as Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto series, so when it screeches onto on iPhone/iPod Touch should be a 100 mile an hour trip down memory worth taking.

N.O.V.A: Basically HALO in your pocket, this sci-fi first-person shooter is gunning for top spot on the AppStore. And given that it will offer both a singleplayer story mode and online multiplayer options (deathmatch and team) it definitely has the potential to kill the competition (e.g. Eliminate, Call of Duty: Zombies). Gameloft previously (almost) perfected touchscreen FPS controls with Modern Combat: Sandstorm, so I’m expecting a flawless gameplay experience from Nova. Playing as a Master Chief lookalike whose futuristic weaponry includes: a pistol, assault rifle, shotgun, sniper rifle and plasma cannon, enemies will most likely be HALO-style aliens, with the action taking place in an intergalactic setting.

Skater Nation: A fully 3D skate ‘em up, that will feature: A nonlinear city environment, a choice of 8 Skaters and a feature that allows the player to upload tricks and replays to YouTube. This game recalls console smash hits like the Tony Hawk series and SKATE, and looks impressive even at this early stage. A combination of accelerometer and touch controls should work well, and Gameloft has already proven with Gangstar that an amazing open world is possible on the platform. Loading times have cut down, so you’ll be able to travel seamlessly from one area to the next.

Avatar: The Game: Based on the forthcoming sci-fi film, Avatar is a third person shooter that looks similar to Gameloft’s Terminator Salvation game. The storyline will act as a prequel to the movie, while gameplay seems to consist of Tomb Raider style exploration and explosive shoot outs with the space marines who are plundering this lush alien planet.

Tom Clancy’s HAWX: Take to the skies in a fighter jet and expect ferocious dog-fights with enemies. Hopefully Online multiplayer will be in place by the game’s release. Tom Clancy HAWX is rumored to be out in December.

Gameloft announced their new upcoming skateboarding game named ‘Skater Nation’ via their new youtube/podcast video. Skater Nation is a skateboarding game like I said and it’s fully 3D and has 8 skateboarders to choose from. Gameloft also released some details on Skater Nation which include:

• Nonlinear City Environment
• 8 Skaters
• Upload tricks and replays to YouTube

There has been very little talk about this game and very little info has been released about Skater Nation. There’s no word on when Skate Nation will be released and the price of Skater Nation. Skater Nation starts at 0:52 in the embedded video above and below.
