The IPS (inter plane switching) panel has been used for everything from the iMac to the iPad to iPhone 4 and provides a much greater viewing range than a standard display. But this time there’s an exception, the 4th generation iPod Touch doesn’t have an IPS panel, however, it does have the Retina Display. One of the reasons may be because of the cost, Apple may have wanted to keep the iPod Touch at the same price and add new feature, but not all of them without raising the price of it. Another possibility is that Apple wanted the iPhone 4 to have all the nicer features because its their flagship device.  Still though, the new iPod Touch has some nice features such as the Apple A4 chip, 2 cameras (not as nice as the iPhone 4′s however), Retina Display, and others.

As you can tell, the iPhone 3GS’s display (on the right) isn’t as sharp and crisp as the iPhone 4′s display (on the left). The reason is, is because the iPhone 4′s display has a Retina Display and an IPS panel. The Retina Display allows the iPhone 4′s display to hold 4X more pixels than the iPhone 3GS’s display. At Apple’s WWDC 2010 keynote, Steve jobs announced the iPhone 4. Well, with this iPhone 4 it has a new Retina Display and an IPS panel and with those new features, it gives the iPhone 4 a better display than the iPhone 3GS. But how much better than the iPhone 3GS? Well, here’s a picture below for you to judge by:

Well, it may just be that the next generation iPhone will have a 960×640 screen, which is 4X the resolution of the iPhone 3GS. Now, you are probably asking “How has this been confirmed?”. Well, with all of these iPhone 4G parts and prototypes leaked, someone has put the iPhone 4G’s screen under a microscope and has counted the pixels. On top of the 960×640 screen, the next generation iPhone may even have a IPS panel, just like the iPad and new iMacs. So, hopefully this is all true so we all can enjoy a better gaming experience on our iPhones and iPod Touches. In other news, the WWDC is just a week away!
