How to: Enable HD Video Recording on iPhone 3GS [Jailbreak]
Here’s a shocker – you can actually enable HD video recording on the iPhone 3GS. Yes, you read that correctly. The ARM Cortex processor on iPhone 3GS is apparently capable of handling 720p video encoding, however, Apple has imposed some limitations in the software. With this hack, you can record video at 1080×800 @ 30fps at up to 20Mbps while the default settings for video recording on the iPhone 3GS are 640×480 @ 3Mbps. Here’s the how to:
- Jailbreak your iPhone 3GS if you haven’t already.
- Install OpenSSH via Cydia.
- Reboot your iPhone 3GS.
- Connect your iPhone 3GS to your computer, make sure iTunes is not running.
- Download and install Cyberduck for Mac or WinSCP for Windows. Enter the following details to login to your iPhone:

Cyberduck
- Server: The IP address of your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. Head to: Settings > WiFi <
- Username: root
- Password: alpine
- Protocol: SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)
WinSCP

If everything went well, you should now be able to record 720p video and here’s a demo video:

Well, Walmart has lowered the price of the 16GB iPhone 3GS to $97, which is very intriguing. So, does this mean that a 16GB iPhone 4G will cost $199 and will Apple offer the iPhone 3G for free? For you want-to-be iPhone owners, you should wait a couple of week to see if a new iPhone will be announced at the WWDC next month. Maybe this is Walmart trying to clear stock in time for the next generation iPhone, nevertheless, it’s still interesting that Walmart would do this. Then again, Walmart’s slogan is: Save money. Live better.
