‘EpicWin’ Review
If your reading this then the chances are that you play too many iPhone games and if you’re like me then playing new releases is more successful at using my time than other things, which, to be honest, I should be doing. Thankfully, the great guys at Supermono have released an app which sorts out our priority issues and even rewards us for doing the stuff that we really don’t want to do. This app is called, EpicWin.
App-play 8/10
EpicWIn could be described as a to-do app, and in essence I suppose it is but it would be a crime to leave it at that. The one thing that sets EpicWin apart from the rest is its goal of not only cataloging things you need to do today or tomorrow but also giving an incentive for you to do them in the only way that gamers know, through leveling up and rewards.
How EpicWin works is that you list the jobs you need to do today, tomorrow next week and so on and then allocate the reward points you should be given for completing this job and the type of chore this to-do is (for example, a quest of strength, stamina, intelligence, social or spirit). Once completed you will earn the points you allocated and also boost your character points (intelligence etc.). These character points level up your selectable avatar. Achievement points gained are put towards earning loot, and you can plot your progress to the next loot on the map. Loot is normally an object with a humorous caption underneath.
However, EpicWin doesn’t come without it’s drawbacks. Firstly, compared to other to-do apps such as Evernote or Things, EpicWIn is very lacking in features. You are only able to select the day when you want this to-do done by. Or you can then select to have the job recurring and select a day of the week or a certain time frame (such as every month). Even though this was perfectly suitable for my basic needs, for those of you who are accustomed to more advanced to-do apps then this might not be your thing. On the other hand, EpicWin keeps everything simple and easy to follow and doesn’t complicate things with countless options and settings.
Graphics 10/10
The art style and graphics are unique and goofy and it’s great to see that the game adopts more of a comedic/cartoony feel rather than the plain and stern look of other to-do apps.
Sound 7/10
Before an update, EpicWin came with no sound and even though you could argue that this is a to-do app, not a game and no productivity app has sound, the funky graphics and game-like art style almost warrant EpicWin some sound and there just seems to be something missing without it. Thankfully, the developers listened to their customers and added some sound effects in the new update. Even though they may not be as extensive as some other iPhone game titles, they provide some much needed feedback and fit well with the app’s theme.
Cost 9/10
At $1.99/£1.79, EpicWin is definitely worth the dough especially for its effectiveness and polish.
Conclusion 34/40 – 4/5
EpicWin is one of the best to-do apps I have found that successfully improves my productivity by motivating me to do those pesky jobs that I keep putting off. Despite its setbacks such as lack of features, its creativity wins through and earns itself a recommendation. Now if you don’t mind, I’m just off to complete my to-do job for finishing this review. 200 achievement points, in the bag!
