‘Cobra Command’ Review
Cobra Command was originally released in 1984 by Data East. It is a laserdisc-based interactive game just like Space Ace and the recently-released Dragon’s Lair for the iPhone. Revolutionary Concepts has brought us another piece of the laserdisc history with Cobra Command.
There are 10 missions or stages in the game and if you’re familiar with interactive movie games back in the day, you’d surely know that this will be a hard game and will rely heavily on trial and error and memorization of the scenes on each stages.
Using the virtual joystick and buttons for the gun and missile, you’ll shoot down various types of air and ground enemies like choppers, planes, and tanks. Basically you have to shoot the enemies first before they shoot you. There is a timer visible on enemies, taking them down before the timer drains out will have you succeed and continue on.
The game features fast-paced gameplay and fortunately the controls especially the virtual joystick works perfectly and precisely. You can actually drag your thumb even outside the joystick so your thumb won’t be limited on the bottom-left corner of the screen, you can pretty much use the whole left side of the screen for this.
The visuals, I may say, is very fluid and crisp especially c0nsidering it’s running on an iPhone. The transition to the small screen is just perfect and Revolutionary Concepts did a great job on this. The sound effects is equally impressive. You’ll hear various sound effects and even a voice-over that either helps you or just distracts you when you least expect it.
The inclusion of Agon for the leaderboards and awards is always a cool feature in every game. I am very pleased that they included it. This adds a slight replay value for the game.
Cobra Command is a very hard game. Even on Easy I find myself having a hard time finishing a stage. As I said earlier, it relies on memorization of the sequences and great timing. Blasting through unfamiliar level would be impossible because you never know what’s coming next.
Revolutionary Concepts did a fantastic job on this one. Although this game is not for everyone, I can still recommend this especially on those gamers who are fond of retro games and laserdisc-based ones.
