The zombie apocalypse is coming back in October with the highly anticipated new season of The Walking Dead. With new characters like Michonne, the “katana-wielding mystery woman” who appeared briefly at the end of season two, and the governor from the original comic book series along with story lines from the comics, the new season promises to be as electrifying and addictive as the first two.
The new season starts Oct. 14, just in time for Halloween, giving fans plenty of time to study the new characters, win that contest for best Halloween costume and get their zombie fix. But if like many fans of the series you can’t seem to get enough, there is a new game in town that should help calm the zombie blood-lust.
Bring On the Brain-Eaters
AMC and RockYou have partnered up with Facebook to create a very satisfying alternative method to watching epic zombie head shots—you can now take them out yourself. The game is a fairly straightforward turn-by-turn game. You start out with a fairly customizable character—hair, clothes, gender and race can all be toyed with—who has been stranded on a bridge after a car accident. You run into another survivor on the bridge who is headed for camp and invites you along. After taking out a few zombies on the way, you make it to camp with your new comrade. There, you are given missions to collect food, water, camping supplies all while eliminating some pesky zombie hoards that get too close for comfort.
The Undead Don’t Stand a Chance
As you complete missions, you level up and gain access to better weapons and energy boosts. You can also choose a computer-generated partner who can come with you to help finish particularly challenging missions. The missions follow along with the basic storyline of seasons one and two, and as you progress through the levels more of the story is revealed.
One of the best aspects of the game is the variety of weapons and kill methods available. Your arsenal includes everything from a frying pan to a semi-automatic assault rifle, and you can shoot, stab or use the butt of your gun to take out the zombie masses.
As you progress through the game, you gain access to better and more-durable weapons, as well as skill points which can be used to beef up traits like vision, stamina, speed and accuracy. This is balanced out by the zombies, who also get faster and smarter as your level increases. Both you and the zombies have a maximum sight and movement radius and, depending on how you distribute the skill points, this can be a challenge.
Become a Zombie-Killing Expert
The game is nice mix of simple strategy and survival-horror, all in a very straightforward and easy to learn click-and-point format. The learning curve is not very steep, and it’s easy to advance into the higher levels with increasingly harder missions to complete.
The game, although very simple, is addictive. Some missions require higher levels to complete, but you can still accept them, leaving you with a blinking reminder that level six is just two missions away. There is also an “expert mode,” which you can choose instead of normal mode. In expert mode, there are no energy refills and the zombies have a much larger walking and vision radius. However, every time you complete an expert mission it gets added to your score, which all your friends can see. Any opportunity to show off your impressive zombie-killing skills is incentive enough for any Walking Dead devotee.
