I’m honestly at a bit of a loss for how to describe this genre defying new game from True Axis, but here goes anyway: 3D platformer crossed with an arcade racer crossed with a flight simulator = Jet Car Stunts. Sound strange? Well it is, but it’s also brilliant.
The game puts you in the cockpit of a futuristic formula1 car racing along topsy-turvy tracks that float miles above the ground. With a tank full of jet fuel your job is to make it to the finish line in one piece, performing the titular death defying stunts whilst you go. Screech around sharp bends! Leap across gaping ravines! jump through hoops! Somersault through thin air! But mistime any of these amazing aerial acrobatics and you’ll plummet to certain doom, or hit a wall at a hundred miles an hour smashing your vehicle into a thousand pieces.
Thankfully the game is quite forgiving, and while difficulty levels do quickly ramp up, things never get overly frustrating. In fact on the contrary, Jet Car Stunts is one of the most insanely addictive and fun titles I’ve ever played. Although it’s fair to say that the more (time and effort) you put into this game, the more you’ll get out of it.
Graphics are gorgeous, the cartoony car and tracks in stark contrast to the near photo-realistic backdrop of blue skies, ultimately meaning Jet Car Stunts has a vastly unique visual style. The controls are intuitive (thankfully so, since the game lacks a tutorial); steering is handled by the accelerometer, while on-screen icons are used for everything else- from air-brake, to turbo-boosts.
There’s a dizzying amount of content on offer, including 25 platforming levels and 11 time trial tracks, meaning the game is of a more than satisfactory length. While re-playability is also added thanks to online leaderboards via OpenFient connectivity. Trust me, the hours will fly by!
In conclusion Jet Car Stunts is an over the top, white-knuckle thrill ride from start to finish. And I really can’t praise this utterly unique title highly enough, but suffice it to say it’s the best 3D platformer, arcade racer, and flight-sim on the AppStore all rolled into one heavenly package. An absolute must have game!
