As I have stated before, I love dual stick shooters. Admittedly, some aren’t as great as Minigore or BloodnGuns, but I think I’ve found one that is.

Guerrilla bob is an extremely polished dual stick shooter that differentiates from the other dual stick shooters out there by having one major gameplay element: a progressive story mode. Games such as Alive4ever have had a story mode though all of the levels were in the same enclosed areas, with no specific sense of direction. In guerrilla bob, there is: ONWARDS!

The problem is, just going in one direction gets tiring after a while. The developers have added a bit of contrast by including levels where you do something different such as ride on a raft shooting people, cross a bridge shooting people and even trying to escape the wrath of a bulldozer (without shooting people this time.)! These elements do help make the game feel a bit more fun to play but it still gets tiring.

The game isn’t actually that long, consisting of a story mode which can easily be finished within the hour. This might turn people off but there is always an unlockable survival mode, which I have to say, is what I love most about this game. It is very different to many other dual stick shooters since you can pick up bonuses which can give you extra life, damage, speed, etc. as well as upgrades to one of your three guns every boss. I find that survival mode is really where this game shines.

The graphics in this game are simply splendid. All the characters are beautifully rendered and each enemy is instantly recognisable, from lethal flamethrower wielders to the extremely annoying suicidal bombers. There is also beautiful and unique artwork in guerrilla bob, which I find really great.

The music in this game isn’t anything special. As far as I could tell, every level had the same music, but I found that it really wasn’t that memorable so it was passable. The sound effects however, are a bit better. Your guns make pretty low-key sounds, which I find is fine, as I never really like hearing too loud gun sounds. Your enemies’ guns make popping noises for some reason, though it all fits into the cartoony theme of the game. Like in Minigore, guerrilla bob also has cheesy catch phrases such as ‘say hello to my bullets!’, but I found that I didn’t enjoy them as much as in Minigore due to the fact that the voice just didn’t seem to fit Bob too well.

Overall, I found this game decent, despite the console quality graphics. the story mode is a bit on the short side, but there is a hard mode and a survival mode to play more on. This game is probably more for the dual stick shooter lovers, as I think the more casual audience will be better off with Minigore.

Overall rating: 4/5 (really polished dual stick shooter that gets tiring after a while)
